Boots Riley
Boots Riley, the filmmaker, musician, and activist known for works like Sorry to Bother You, has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict for over two decades. His opinions, expressed primarily through social media posts on X (formerly Twitter), interviews, and public statements, frame the situation as a genocide, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes perpetrated by Israel, often enabled by U.S. funding and policy.
He supports Palestinian rights, including calls for ceasefire, an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, and the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Riley has also participated in protests, signed open letters condemning the violence, and linked the issue to broader themes of anti-imperialism, racism, and labor organizing as a means for change.
In a 2015 Democracy Now! interview, he discussed incorporating Palestine into his lyrics since the late 1990s and endorsed BDS as a nonviolent strategy, noting Israel’s undemocratic control over Palestinians. He signed a 2023 open letter with over 1,000 Black activists supporting “the liberation of Palestine’s land and people.”
In May 2025, he signed an open letter condemning Hollywood’s “industry silence over Gaza,” alongside figures like Joaquin Phoenix and Riz Ahmed. He has called for immediate ceasefires, as in a November 2023 post emphasizing that most people, including the Jewish community, want one, and criticized the destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure for enabling uncounted deaths.
