Fontaines D.C.
Fontaines D.C., an Irish post-punk band, has consistently expressed strong support for Palestine and voiced criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The band has taken multiple public actions to highlight their stance:
- Charity EP and Donations: In December 2023, Fontaines D.C. collaborated with Massive Attack and Young Fathers on a limited-edition vinyl EP titled Ceasefire to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders’ (Médecins Sans Frontières) emergency operations in Gaza and the West Bank. All profits from the EP, expected to exceed £150,000, were donated to the charity. The band also donated $2,560 (£2,003) won from a viral music quiz on TikTok to Doctors Without Borders “for Palestine.” They have called for an immediate ceasefire and “a permanent end to Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine,” emphasizing solidarity with Palestinians living under what they describe as a “brutal military operation.”
-
Concert Statements and Displays: During performances, Fontaines D.C. has displayed messages such as “Free Palestine” and “Israel is committing genocide, use your voice” on stage screens, notably at festivals like Primavera Sound in Barcelona (June 2025), Glastonbury, and a sold-out London concert at Finsbury Park in July 2025. Lead singer Grian Chatten has also joined audience chants of “Free Palestine” and performed with a Palestinian flag on stage equipment.
-
Award Speech Criticism: At the Rolling Stone UK Awards in November 2024, guitarist Carlos O’Connell used the band’s acceptance speech for Best Album to condemn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Zionism, stating, “Free Palestine. F*** Netanyahu. F*** Zionism.” This followed the International Criminal Court’s issuance of an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
-
Boycott of Istanbul Gig: In August 2024, the band canceled a scheduled performance at the Zorlu PSM venue in Istanbul, citing the venue’s connection to Zorlu Energy, which reportedly supplies 5-8% of Israel’s energy. The decision was made in solidarity with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and after consultations with Palestinian artists and human rights activists. The band stated, “We must be clear in our convictions and put solidarity with the people of Palestine first.”
