“Mahmoud Khalil is an Algerian-Palestinian activist and former Columbia University graduate student known for his role in the 2024 Columbia University pro-Palestinian protests and for his detention by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2025.
He was released from U.S. immigration detention on June 20, 2025, after more than three months of detention in March 2025 following his arrest during peaceful protests at Columbia University. A federal judge ruled he was not a flight risk or threat, ordering his release while his immigration case proceeds. ”
