Massive Attack
Massive Attack, the British trip-hop band, has consistently expressed strong support for Palestinian rights and has been highly critical of Israel’s policies and genocide in Gaza. They have boycotted performing in Israel since 1999, predating the formal BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement’s call in 2005, citing observations of “military oppression, occupation & apartheid.” This stance aligns with their broader activism, including calls for ceasefire, condemnation of what they describe as genocide in Gaza, and opposition to UK government complicity.
Key Statements and Actions
- Boycott and BDS Support: The band has refused to perform in Israel as a form of non-violent pressure to end the occupation of Palestine. In response to a fan’s comment in January 2024, they reiterated: “Massive Attack have not performed (& will not perform) in Israel since the international request was made by Palestinian civic society & artistic institutions in 2002.”
- Condemnation of Gaza Conflict: Throughout 2023-2024, they posted frequently about the Gaza crisis, describing Israel’s actions as genocide and highlighting civilian suffering. Examples include:
- December 2024: Sharing an Amnesty International report stating “Israel’s war in Gaza amounts to genocide.”
- August 2024: “In Washington & London, every massacre, obliterated school or hospital, & death of every innocent man, woman & child is accepted as part of some warped geopolitical strategy or policy. There is no other explanation for the failure to stop Israel.”
- June 2024: “End fossil fuel licensing. No ambiguity on genocide. No arms to Israel.”
- April 2024: “When the murdered in Gaza … are white.” (Referencing media bias in coverage of aid worker deaths).
- February 2024: “There is one: genocide” (in response to UNRWA’s statement on civilian deaths).
- Ceasefire EP (December 2023): Collaborated with Fontaines D.C. and Young Fathers on a limited-edition vinyl EP titled Ceasefire, with all profits supporting Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) operations in Gaza and the West Bank. The project was inspired by words from a Gaza hospital whiteboard by Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nujaila, who was later killed in a strike. They described MSF’s work as “astounding” amid “constant bombardment, vicious military occupation & forced starvation.”
- Alliance Against Intimidation (July 2025): Announced a syndicate of musicians (including Brian Eno, Fontaines D.C., Kneecap, and others) to counter “intimidations” and censorship from pro-Israel groups in the music industry. In a statement, they said: “This collective action is really about offering some kind of solidarity to those artists who are living day after day in a screen-time genocide, but are worried about using their platforms to express their horror at that because of the level of censorship within their industry.” They added: “The scenes in Gaza have moved beyond description. We write as artists who’ve chosen to use our public platforms to speak out against the genocide occurring there and the role of the UK government in facilitating it.”
-
Other Advocacy: They have criticized media bias, supported UK politicians unambiguous on Gaza (e.g., endorsing Carla Denyer in Bristol), opposed arms sales to Israel, and highlighted issues like the destruction of Palestinian refugee rights. In July 2024, they urged media to focus on Gaza rather than artist controversies.
