She has used her social media platform, primarily Instagram Stories, to share her views, describing Israel’s military actions in Gaza as “genocide and ethnic cleansing” and likening the situation in Gaza to a “concentration camp” due to the lack of electricity, water, and freedom of movement for Palestinians. She has also criticized Western media for biased reporting, stating that it predominantly shows the Israeli perspective and has expressed solidarity with Palestinians, drawing parallels to her own Mexican heritage by saying, “I too come from a colonized country. Palestine will be free.”
Barrera has consistently condemned both antisemitism and Islamophobia, emphasizing that her advocacy is rooted in a desire for peace, human rights, and freedom for all. She clarified in an October 27, 2023, Instagram post that her support for Palestine does not equate to hostility toward Jewish people, stating, “I love my Jewish friends. I stand with you in these horrible times. I empathize with your fear and pain. No one deserves to be persecuted or attacked.” She has also participated in pro-Palestinian protests, notably at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, where she chanted “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” a slogan controversial for being interpreted by some as antisemitic, though she framed it as a call for Palestinian liberation.
Her outspokenness led to significant professional repercussions, including her firing from Scream VII in November 2023 by Spyglass Media Group, who cited her posts as antisemitic, specifically referencing her use of terms like “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing”, which is approuved by multiple big organisation like Amnesty. Barrera responded by condemning hate and prejudice of any kind, asserting that her comments were made from a place of love and humanity, and that she would continue to speak out for those in need. She described the aftermath as “the darkest and hardest year of my life,” noting a significant reduction in Hollywood work opportunities for about 10 months.
