Nemahsis
Nemahsis, whose real name is Nemah Hasan, is a Palestinian-Canadian singer and songwriter known for her indie-pop music and vocal advocacy for Palestinian rights. She has been outspoken about her pro-Palestinian views, particularly regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which she has repeatedly described as a genocide against Palestinians. In October 2023, shortly after the escalation of violence, she publicly stated that her record label dropped her for her pro-Palestine stance, sharing in a video that they cited her support as the reason. Despite this setback, she continued releasing music independently and emphasized that her art is inseparable from her Palestinian identity and experiences of generational trauma.
Nemahsis has used her platform to call out what she sees as ethnic cleansing and war crimes in Palestine, urging people not to separate her as an artist from her advocacy. She has expressed disillusionment with Western responses to the crisis, noting in late 2023 that the world now knows the truth about the situation but has still “left us for dead,” and she vowed not to place hope in Western institutions again. In interviews and social media, she has highlighted the normalization and humanization of Palestinians as a goal of her work, while criticizing Israel genocide without conflating them with Jewish people as a whole. She has also shared content supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza and condemning figures like Radiohead’s Thom Yorke for dismissive attitudes
