Ramy Youssef
Ramy Youssef has been vocal about his support for the Palestinian cause and has used his platform to address the suffering in Gaza. During his March 2024 “Saturday Night Live” monologue, he called for the freedom of Palestinians and the release of hostages, saying, “Please stop the suffering. Stop the violence. Please free the people of Palestine, please. And please free the hostages, all the hostages, please.” This was framed within a comedic bit about praying for his friend Ahmed’s family in Gaza, highlighting the dire situation there. The remarks received significant applause and sparked both praise and controversy, with some applauding his candor and others questioning the appropriateness of the platform.
Youssef has consistently advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza, notably signing an open letter to President Biden in October 2023 and wearing an “Artists for Ceasefire” pin at the 2024 Academy Awards. He has also donated all proceeds from the final 12 shows of his “More Feelings” comedy tour to the American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) for humanitarian relief in Gaza, with a notable event in Brooklyn attended by celebrities like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez.
In interviews, Youssef has emphasized the power imbalance in the conflict, arguing that Gaza’s situation—where water, electricity, and aid are controlled—makes the term “war” misleading. He has stated, “Nobody wants there to be people getting bombed indiscriminately, and nobody wants there to be hostages,” describing his remarks as “completely inoffensive.” He also expressed frustration at being questioned about his stance on Hamas, clarifying his opposition to violence while addressing the broader humanitarian crisis.
His work, including the Hulu series Ramy, has explored the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with its third season filmed in Israel and the Palestinian territories to depict life under occupation. Youssef has noted the personal impact of the conflict, mentioning Palestinian friends and crew members who have lost family in Gaza.
While Youssef’s advocacy has drawn criticism, including from a New Jersey lawmaker who called his Rutgers commencement speech selection “polarizing” due to his views, he remains unapologetic, stating it’s more nerve-racking to stay silent than to speak out.
