The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye), a UN World Food Programme (WFP) Goodwill Ambassador since 2021, has demonstrated strong support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza through substantial financial donations via his XO Humanitarian Fund, which he established in partnership with World Food Program USA to combat global hunger. While he has not issued explicit public statements condemning specific parties in the Israel-Gaza conflict or outlining a detailed political opinion, his actions emphasize providing urgent food aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting Palestinian civilians amid the ongoing war. These contributions align with WFP’s non-partisan mission to deliver emergency assistance in conflict zones, and they have been framed by the organization as vital relief for Palestinians facing famine and starvation.
Donations and Impact
- December 2023: Donated $2.5 million, equivalent to funding 4 million emergency meals and 820 metric tons of food parcels. This supported over 173,000 Palestinians for two weeks, providing essentials like wheat flour, canned food, and ready-to-eat items in coordination with UN agencies.
- April 2024: Followed up with another $2 million, supplying over 1,500 metric tons of fortified wheat flour to produce more than 18 million loaves of bread. This aided over 157,000 Palestinians for one month, targeting families in shelters, community kitchens, and makeshift camps, especially in central and southern Gaza.
- Total to Gaza: $4.5 million directed specifically to WFP’s operations there, part of broader fund efforts that have raised $6.5 million overall (including $2 million for Ethiopian women and children). The Weeknd has also personally contributed $1.8 million to WFP initiatives and pledged $1 per ticket from his 2024 stadium tour to the fund.
